This is a striking photo by Ammar Abdullah of Reuters showing a little Syrian girl being taken from the site of a government airstrike: Unfortunately scene like this have been all too common since July 2012, when the regime of Bashar al Assad began bombing rebel-held areas across the country. The attacks have targeted bakeries, markets, hospitals, and schools in an attempt to disrupt civilian life under rebel rule.

More than 11,000 children have died in the 33-month civil war. More than 1 million Syrian children are refugees in neighboring countries while more than 4 million children inside the country are affected.
The air campaign has decimated the country's largest cities, especially Aleppo and Homs. Here is a photo from the Duma suburb outside the capital of Damascus:
