Syrian refugee Zaki Khalil is trying to get his family across Europe. His family is now crossing from Serbia into Croatia.
"The most difficult part for us so far was in between the Serbian-Macedonian border," he told Reuters. "We walked for approximately seven kilometres in the rain and it was of course difficult. But as a human being the most difficult part is when you see your children cold and hungry and you can't make them feel warm."
The journey is hardest on Khalil's children, one of whom is just 25 days old. Keeping her warm is the family's top priority as they've survived off of biscuits, water and juice.
"In general, the situation is very bad," he said. "Humanitarian organizations are helping us, but how? They give us biscuits, pieces of chocolate, and water for the kids but there is no proper food and nutrition for the children."
Walking through the cold rain for many miles has been tough on Khalil and his family, but it hasn't crushed his spirit.
"I just wish that all these people reach their destinations and hopefully they will forget all the fatigue and they will not be shocked with the European reality," he said. "This is what I wish for."
