ISIS

Here’s what you won’t see in ISIS propaganda: Syrian women and children standing in line with empty buckets for food in the Islamic State group’s self-declared capital, Raqqa. But that’s what two videos posted online by a group of human rights and anti-ISIS activists from the Syrian city appear to show. The group, called Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently, claims the videos were taken Friday, the second day of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

It is unclear why the group posted the videos, but they seem to deal a blow to the Islamic State group by contradicting scenes of prosperity and abundance that ISIS has touted since the start of Ramadan, which is characterized by daytime fasting and lavish evening feasts.

ISIS has posted pictures showing markets in the Syrian cities of Palmyra and Dir El-Zour full of food.

Other pictures show ISIS members breaking their daily fast with a shared meal as part of a broader ISIS propaganda campaign boasting ice cream shops, stores for sweets and shops selling fruit juice in Syria.

A video allegedly showing children and women waiting in line for food in Raqqa, Syria.

ISIS members break a day’s fast with iftar, the evening meal during Ramadan.
